Stanley Marsland was 19 when he started a business that specialized in emerging technologies. It was 1929 and the emerging technology that year was radio and other electronics. A book has been written about him.
The new book charts how a 19-year-old and his engineering company helped Waterloo and Canada come of age after the Second World War.
The Marsland Engineering Story, Innovation and Entrepreneurs by Larry Marsland and John Roe highlights the achievements of Stanley Marsland and his company, Marsland Engineering, which at one point employed over 1,400 people in Waterloo.
Marsland Engineering Ltd was one of the earliest high tech companies in Waterloo Region. Specializing in radio technology and electronics, it was for a time Waterloo's largest industrial employer and Canada's largest privately owned electronics manufacturer. Marsland Engineering became a major supplier to such companies as North Electric and IBM before the company was sold in 1969.
